Tyrel Barry Named Otero College’s Head Women’s Volleyball Coach
Tyrel Barry has been selected as the Otero College Head Women’s Volleyball Coach. He began his duties on July 28.
Originally from Hoehne, Barry is no stranger to the valley, he is an alum of Otero College obtaining his Associate of Arts degree and then following up with his Bachelor of Arts in Human Performance and Language Development at Adams State University. Barry coached six years at Sand Dunes Volleyball Club, two years at Alamosa Gymnastics and six years at Hoehne Jr./Sr. High School as their volleyball coach. At the college level, he was the assistant volleyball coach at Adams State University.
Chris Carrillo, athletic director, shared, “Tyrel Barry is a young and upcoming college coach that we are fortunate to have here at Otero College. Coach Barry is former Otero College graduate himself, so to have a former alumnus back on campus as our head volleyball coach has been great. Coach Barry has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to the game of volleyball, and we are looking forward to upcoming season. Coach Barry is a tremendous student of the game as well as the coaching profession. With Coach Barry’s passion and work ethic, the Otero Volleyball program’s future is bright.”
As head coach, Barry will be responsible for the instruction and development of his team unit as well as the athletes individually. His goal is to see his team through the ups and downs and help them become the best they can be on and off the court.
When asked about Otero, Barry said, “I love the close knit “home” feeling of being on campus. You’re more than another face, you’re a valued person and everyone knows your name.” Off the court, he raises sheep and cattle on his family ranch. He enjoys the agriculture and western lifestyle; it has been a way of life for his family since they came to the area.
