Tutoring
The Learning Commons Tutoring Center provides all Otero students with the opportunity to achieve both academic and personal success in a comfortable, non-intimidating atmosphere. Located adjacent to the TRiO Department in the Learning Commons, the Center is designed to give students an immersive support experience that encourages learning and emboldens a spirit of self-advocacy.
Research has shown that college students often struggle with or choose not to seek help for academic or learning challenges. Referred to as, “Non-Help Seeking,” a high percentage of students are reluctant to seek help from their instructors or tutors because of cultural stigmas attached to needing help.
In response to this research, the goal of the Learning Commons’ tutoring program is to “create a supportive community where students feel comfortable seeking and receiving help”. The tutoring team is composed of professionals and students who are committed to applying their experience and work ethic to achieve this goal.
