Medical Laboratory Technician Pinning to be Held on Dec. 11, 2023

Otero College is set to graduate its 9th class of Medical Laboratory Technicians on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 3 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 120.

Medical Laboratory Technicians perform medical laboratory procedures and tests. They apply strategies to analyze and record patient results through various methods of testing. The data they provide gives physicians valuable diagnostic and treatment information. Students learn laboratory testing and blood and body fluid analysis in areas of transfusion medicine, microbiology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and molecular diagnostics. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the ASCP nationally recognized board exam. Graduates are work-force ready to enter a high demand field serving a critical patient care function.

The MLT program is designed for students to graduate with an Associate of Applied Science degree in five semesters. Three semesters are spent at the Otero campus and two semesters are partially spent in clinical rotations at an affiliated clinical facility. Otero’s MLT program began in 2013 and has graduated 33 Medical Laboratory Technicians.

Students who graduate from the MLT program at Otero can go on to achieve a bachelor’s degree and their Medical Laboratory Science certification.

Students are currently enrolling in the MLT program for spring of 2024. For questions regarding the MLT program, contact Angela Tarrant at (719) 384-6813 or  Otero-mlt@otero.edu.
