Chess Club
The Otero College Chess Club is open to all students regardless of Chess experience. Whether you’ve been playing for years or have an interest but just haven’t learned how the pieces move, stop by the Learning Commons every Wednesday 6-8 PM and play a few games.
Why play chess?
The game of chess helps you develop your problem-solving skills, concentration, logical thinking, focus of thought and self-discipline. It’s also a fun and competitive way to pass the time.
I’m a beginner at chess. Where do I start?
If you’re just getting started or want to learn the fundamentals there are a number of free resources out there, especially on YouTube. Below is a short list of resources for beginning players:
Become a Chess Club officer
As a college club, you or one of your fellow students can work towards becoming Chess Club officer (President, Vice President, etc.). This is a necessary step towards working with the Associated Student Government and raising funds for the Chess Club. If you are interested in becoming a Chess Club officer, contact staff sponsor Tim Kelley at tim.kelley@otero.edu or faculty sponsor Dr. Joel Gray at joel.gray@otero.edu.
