Oh My Stars

August 25, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Join us for afternoon and evening sessions under the stars as we delve into the fascinating world of astronomy with Mark Korbitz, Astronomy Professor from Otero College. In two separate interactive conference sessions, Mark will guide us through a celestial journey, combining the impact of weather events and climate change on observing the stars, cutting-edge technology, and captivating folklore.

Whether you’re an amateur astronomer, a science enthusiast, or simply curious about the mysteries of the universe, this evening of stargazing promises to be a captivating and enlightening experience. Join us as we embark on a celestial journey and expand our horizons through the wonders of astronomy with Mark Korbitz.

Note: Participants are encouraged to bring their smartphones or laptops to engage with Stellarium during the session, although it is not required for participation.

Mark will introduce us to Stellarium, a powerful open-source planetarium software that brings the wonders of the night sky to life. With its immersive visualizations and accurate representations of celestial bodies, Stellarium provides a unique opportunity to explore distant galaxies, constellations, and planets right from the comfort of your own home.

Moreover, Mark will shed light on the relationship between weather events, climate change, and stargazing. Learn how atmospheric conditions and light pollution affect our ability to observe the stars and understand the broader implications of climate change on astronomy. Gain insights into how we can mitigate these challenges and ensure a future where stargazing remains a cherished activity for generations to come.
